What is the procedure of root canal treatment?

After administering local anesthesia, access to the root canals is made by removing all decayed and unsupported tooth structure. This is followed by thorough cleaning and shaping of the canals by using instruments (files) and cleaning with different solutions (irrigants). The cleaned root canals are then filled with a biocompatible material (gutta percha) following which the tooth is restored with a filling material and placement of a crown/cap (if indicated).
