Scaling refers to the procedure of removing external stains and calculus from the tooth surface which cannot be removed with regular tooth brushing.

Whereas polishing, which is done after scaling, is the procedure of smoothening the tooth surface with the help of a paste to make them comparatively shiny in appearance.
