Scaling can be done by hand instruments or using an ultrasonic scaler. Tip of the scaler contacts the tooth surface to remove all external stains and deposits. The procedure is accompanied by continuous water supply. Polishing is done after scaling has been completed. A layer of polishing paste is applied on the tooth surfaces and gently rubbed in slow speed with a polishing rubber cup attached to a hand piece to make the tooth surface smooth and give it a shiny appearance.
